Romanians have five main visa routes to the UK in 2026: Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Family, Student, and Innovator Founder — each designed for a different purpose and with different eligibility criteria, costs, and timelines.

This guide compares all five routes side by side so you can identify which one fits your situation before going deeper. For the full breakdown of the most-used route, see our Skilled Worker visa guide for Romanians, or start with the complete guide to moving to the UK from Romania.

Route 1: Skilled Worker Visa

Most common Skilled Worker Visa

The primary route for employed professionals. Requires a confirmed job offer from a UK employer on the licensed sponsors register, a role at RQF Level 6 or above (for new applications from 22 July 2025), and a salary meeting the general threshold of £41,700 per year or the going rate for your occupation code — whichever is higher.

The employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) which you include in your application. You cannot apply without one. Leads to ILR after 5 continuous years.

Route 2: Health and Care Worker Visa

Healthcare Health and Care Worker Visa

A lower-cost variant of the Skilled Worker route for doctors, nurses, and certain care workers employed by the NHS or approved social care providers. The significant advantage is that Health and Care Worker visa holders are exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge — saving £1,035 per year. Fees are also substantially lower than the standard Skilled Worker rate.

As of July 2025, the minimum skill level for Health and Care Worker roles has been raised to match the Skilled Worker route (RQF Level 6+). Adult social care roles have transitional arrangements until July 2028. The Social Care Worker route for new overseas applicants closed in July 2025.

Route 3: Family Visa

Family Family Visa (Partner or Child)

For Romanians joining a partner, parent, or child who is already a UK citizen or settled resident. No job offer is required, but your UK sponsor must meet a minimum income threshold: £29,000 per year to sponsor a partner (rising to £34,500 from January 2025, and to £38,700 by early 2025 — the threshold increases are being phased in). The sponsor's income, not the applicant's, is what matters for eligibility.

Children under 18 joining a parent already settled in the UK have their own separate application process. Family visas can lead to ILR after 5 years (partner route) or sooner in some circumstances.

Route 4: Student Visa

Education Student Visa

For Romanians accepted onto a course at a UK university or other licensed student sponsor. You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your institution before applying. There is no salary threshold, but you must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living costs.

The Student visa allows you to work up to 20 hours per week during term time. After completing a UK degree, you can switch to the Graduate Route (see below), which allows 2 years of unsupported work or job seeking without a sponsor.

The Graduate Route (Post-Degree)

Not a route for moving to the UK from Romania — but relevant for Romanians who have already studied in the UK. If you complete a UK degree on a Student visa, you can switch to the Graduate Route and stay for 2 years (3 years for PhDs) without a sponsor or job offer. You can work in any role during this time.

The Graduate Route is commonly used as a bridge to the Skilled Worker visa — you find a sponsored employer while on it and then switch. The application is made in-country and costs £715.

Only available in-country

The Graduate Route cannot be applied for from Romania. You must have completed your UK degree on a Student visa and apply before your student leave expires. Romanians looking to move from Romania for the first time cannot use this route as a starting point.

Route 5: Innovator Founder Visa

Business Innovator Founder Visa

For Romanians who want to start an innovative business in the UK. You need endorsement from an approved body (a list is on gov.uk), who must assess your business idea as innovative, viable, and scalable. No minimum salary threshold, but you typically need sufficient investment funds — often cited as £50,000, though this is not a fixed legal requirement.

This is a demanding route. The business idea must be genuinely new — not an existing business model — and the endorsing body's bar is high. It is not a backdoor into the UK for established businesses.

What About Youth Mobility?

There is no Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) available to Romanian citizens as of April 2026. The UK runs bilateral YMS agreements with 13 countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, and Japan — but not with EU member states, including Romania.

A UK-EU Youth Experience Scheme was agreed in principle at the UK-EU summit in May 2025. As of April 2026, the scheme is still being negotiated and is not operational. No confirmed start date or specific terms for Romanian applicants had been published at the time of this guide. Check gov.uk for the current status.

Third-party sites advertising YMS for Romanians

Some immigration services advertise what they describe as a Youth Mobility path for Romanians. These typically involve third-country routes or schemes for British Overseas Citizens — they are not the standard YMS and conditions apply. Do not pay for advice on this without verifying directly on gov.uk first.

How to Choose the Right Route

In most cases the right route is determined by your situation, not by choice:

  • Moving for an employed role in a non-healthcare field → Skilled Worker
  • Moving as a doctor, nurse, or care worker for the NHS → Health and Care Worker
  • Joining a partner or parent already settled in the UK → Family visa
  • Studying at a UK university → Student visa
  • Already completed a UK degree → Graduate Route (in-country switch)
  • Launching an innovative business → Innovator Founder

If your circumstances are ambiguous — for example, you have a job offer but the role may or may not be at RQF Level 6, or your salary is close to the threshold — professional immigration advice before applying is worth the cost. A refused application is not refunded.

Before You Apply

The UK visa system for Romanians is more structured than it may appear at first glance. The five routes are genuinely distinct — they are not interchangeable, and the eligibility criteria are not negotiable. The most common mistake is assuming the Skilled Worker route is the only option without checking whether a Family or Student visa might be both cheaper and faster for a specific situation.

The rules also change. Salary thresholds have moved twice in two years, the skill level requirement shifted in July 2025, and fees rose in April 2026. Any summary — including this one — can become outdated. The definitive source is always gov.uk, and using the check-uk-visa tool before committing to a route takes two minutes and removes ambiguity.

Use this page as a starting map, then follow the detailed guides for your specific route before making any application decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The right visa depends on your purpose. Most employed professionals use the Skilled Worker visa, which requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor and a salary of at least £41,700. Healthcare workers have access to the Health and Care Worker visa. Those joining a partner or parent in the UK apply for a Family visa. Students apply for the Student visa. Self-employed entrepreneurs with an innovative business idea may qualify for the Innovator Founder visa. Check gov.uk/check-uk-visa to confirm which route applies to your situation.

No. Romania does not currently have a bilateral Youth Mobility Scheme agreement with the UK. The UK has such schemes with 13 countries including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, but not EU member states including Romania. A UK-EU Youth Experience Scheme was agreed in principle at the May 2025 UK-EU summit, but as of April 2026 the scheme is not yet operational and no timeline for Romanian applicants has been confirmed. Check gov.uk for the latest status.

Yes, in some cases. You can move without a job offer if you are joining a partner who is already settled in the UK (Family visa), applying as a student (Student visa), or qualifying for the Innovator Founder visa with a viable business idea. The Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker visas both require a confirmed job offer from a licensed sponsor. There is no visa route that allows Romanians to enter the UK and then look for work without any prior authorisation.

The Health and Care Worker visa has significantly lower fees. The standard fee from outside the UK is £304 for up to 3 years (rising to £324 from 8 April 2026), compared to £769 for the standard Skilled Worker visa (rising to £819). Health and Care Worker visa holders are also exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge, saving £1,035 per year. The total cost saving over 3 years can exceed £3,500 when you include the IHS exemption.

The Graduate Route allows international students who have completed a UK degree to stay and work in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhDs) without a job offer or sponsor. Romanians who studied in the UK on a Student visa can switch to the Graduate Route after graduation. It is not available to those who studied outside the UK and cannot be applied for from Romania. The Graduate Route is often used as a bridge to the Skilled Worker visa — you find a sponsored role while on it and then switch before the 2 years expire.

Yes. All UK visa applications from Romania are made online at gov.uk, followed by a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre in Romania. The main VAC is in Bucharest. You submit your documents online and attend the centre to give fingerprints and hand over your passport. The process does not require visiting the UK before your visa is granted.
