Ruxandra Maria
Three decades of expat life across multiple countries — writing about the UK move from the inside, with the perspective that only lived experience can bring.
About Ruxandra
Ruxandra Maria brings something rare to expat writing: she has actually lived it, repeatedly, across more than three decades and multiple countries. Moving abroad is not an abstract concept for her — it is the lens through which she has understood work, healthcare systems, bureaucracy, community, and the particular feeling of building a life somewhere new from scratch.
Her academic foundation spans mathematics and computer science, followed by a degree in economics, finance and banking, and a qualification in digital media and publishing from the University of the Arts London. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. That combination — quantitative rigour, financial literacy, marketing practice, and creative education — shapes everything she writes. Where others see a relocation guide, she sees a system to map, a cost to model, and a human story to tell clearly.
Moving is never just about logistics. It is learning about the culture and the process of integrating into a new country — and that takes time, patience, and a willingness to find your way through the uncertainty.
She is particularly drawn to the questions that don't have clean official answers: how qualifications transfer, what the UK job market actually values, how to make sense of a new system when you're arriving from the outside. Much of her writing at Moving to the UK reflects questions she has navigated herself, first as a newcomer, and now as someone who knows the ground well enough to help others cross it faster.
Areas of Focus
Ruxandra writes across the lived experience of UK relocation — the things that take newcomers by surprise and the knowledge that makes settling in faster and less stressful.
She also brings particular insight to the experience of expats who have relocated more than once and understand that each move resets the clock — no matter how experienced you are, a new country means a new learning curve. That understanding shapes how she writes: with empathy for where people are, and clarity about what they need to know next.
As part of the site's growing online learning and career development cluster, Ruxandra co-authors guides on skills, courses, and what it actually means to rebuild a professional life after a move — drawing on her backgrounds in economics, computing, and marketing to bring analytical depth to what is otherwise a crowded and generic content space.
