Booking a hotel for your UK arrival: what expats need to know
The single most common mistake expats make is under-booking. Most assume they'll find a flat within a week or two — in reality, referencing, Right to Rent checks and deposit transfers typically add 3–4 weeks to even the smoothest rental process. Booking flexibly with free cancellation costs nothing.
For stays over two weeks, an aparthotel or short-let furnished flat is usually better value and far more comfortable than a hotel room. A kitchen, washing machine and living area make the transitional period much less stressful and substantially reduce daily costs.
A hotel address is accepted by most GP surgeries, by the Home Office for BRP delivery, and by digital banks (Monzo, Starling) as initial proof of UK presence. Traditional high-street banks typically require a residential address, so plan your banking steps accordingly.
Weekly rates are meaningfully lower than per-night rates — typically 15–25% less for a 7-night booking. Always enter your full intended stay as a single booking on Expedia rather than rolling day-by-day to capture the weekly rate discount.
