Studying at a UK university — what internationally mobile students need to know

The UK university system is among the most respected in the world. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each operate somewhat differently — most notably on tuition fees. In Scotland, Scottish-domiciled students pay no tuition fees for undergraduate study at Scottish universities. In England, tuition fees for home students are currently capped at £9,250 per year. International students (those without settled status or a UK/Irish passport) pay higher fees which vary significantly by university and course.

Undergraduate degrees in England, Wales and Northern Ireland typically take three years; in Scotland, four years (with a broader first two years). Postgraduate taught degrees (MSc, MA, MBA) are typically one year in the UK — considerably shorter than the two-year equivalent in the United States and many other countries. This makes UK postgraduate study attractive for professionals seeking to upskill without a prolonged career break.

The Russell Group is a self-selecting association of 24 research-intensive universities that includes Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, Edinburgh and Manchester among others. Russell Group membership is widely used as a proxy for academic quality, though several excellent universities outside the group (such as St Andrews, Bath and Lancaster) consistently outrank some Russell Group members in subject-specific league tables. Checking subject-level rankings alongside overall university rankings gives a more accurate picture.

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the central application platform for UK undergraduate admissions. Most applications are submitted in October for entry the following September, with a January deadline for many courses. International students should be aware that English language requirements (typically IELTS 6.5–7.5 depending on the course) apply to non-native English speakers, and that many universities require evidence of language proficiency at the point of application.

Common questions

Universities — FAQs

Undergraduate applications to UK universities are made through UCAS (ucas.com). You can apply to up to five courses in one application. The main deadline is 25 January for most courses, with an earlier deadline of 15 October for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary science courses. Postgraduate applications are made directly to universities and deadlines vary by course. Many competitive postgraduate programmes have rolling admissions and fill places early, so applying as early as possible is advisable.
International student tuition fees vary widely by university and course. For 2024–25, undergraduate international fees typically range from £15,000 to £38,000 per year, with medicine and some specialist courses at the higher end. Postgraduate taught fees range from £14,000 to £35,000+ for a one-year programme. Some universities offer partial scholarships for high-achieving international students. If you have settled status (Indefinite Leave to Remain) or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you may qualify for home fee status — check with individual universities.
Home students (UK/Irish citizens and those with settled status) can work without restriction. International students on a Student visa are typically permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official vacation periods. Restrictions may apply depending on the type of course and institution — check your visa conditions carefully. Working more than the permitted hours is a visa breach and can have serious consequences.
The Russell Group is a self-selected association of 24 universities that emphasise research intensity and selective admissions. Membership is often used as a shorthand for academic prestige, and Russell Group degrees carry weight with many employers. However, membership is not the only marker of quality — several non-Russell Group universities (St Andrews, Bath, Lancaster, Loughborough) consistently outperform Russell Group members in specific subject rankings. Always check subject-level league tables for the specific course you are interested in rather than relying solely on overall university rankings.
Yes — most UK universities offer some form of scholarship or bursary for international students, though competition is intense and the amounts vary. The Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK government, is the most prestigious fully-funded scholarship for postgraduate study and is open to applicants from over 160 countries. The Commonwealth Scholarship offers similar funding for students from Commonwealth nations. Individual universities also offer merit-based and need-based awards — check each university's scholarships page directly, as eligibility criteria and deadlines differ.
