Choosing a language school after moving to the UK

For many people relocating to the UK, improving English is a practical priority from day one — whether for daily life, to meet visa conditions, to progress in a new job, or to support children settling into school. The UK has one of the world's most developed English language teaching (ELT) sectors, with hundreds of accredited language schools operating across London and the major UK cities.

The most important quality marker to look for is British Council accreditation. The British Council inspects language schools against the Accreditation UK scheme and publishes a list of accredited providers. Choosing an accredited school gives you assurance about the standard of teaching, student welfare and facilities — and is a requirement for many Student visa holders. Non-accredited schools are not necessarily poor, but accreditation is the clearest independent signal of quality.

If you need to pass an IELTS, OET or Cambridge English exam — for example as part of a visa application, for professional registration (NHS, teaching, law), or for university entry — look for schools with a dedicated exam preparation programme and strong pass rate data. The best exam preparation courses are intensive and focused, with regular mock tests under exam conditions. General English courses at the same school will not always prepare you adequately for exam-level performance.

For working professionals, business English courses are structured around workplace communication skills — writing professional emails, presenting, negotiating, and understanding British workplace culture — rather than general grammar and vocabulary. Many schools offer early morning or evening sessions, or one-to-one tuition, which can be scheduled around a working day. If flexibility is a priority, ask specifically about timetabling options before enrolling.

Language Schools — FAQs

If you are applying for a Student visa to study English in the UK, your school must be on the Home Office Register of Licensed Sponsors — which requires British Council accreditation. If you already have the right to live and work in the UK (for example on a Skilled Worker visa, as a family member of a UK citizen, or through settled status), you are free to study at any school and British Council accreditation, while a quality indicator, is not a legal requirement.
It depends on your starting level and how you define "work-ready". The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) gives a useful guide: moving from A2 (basic) to B2 (upper intermediate — sufficient for most professional environments) typically requires around 400–600 hours of study. At an intensive language school (20–25 hours of class per week), that equates to roughly 4–6 months of full-time study. Moving from B1 to C1 (proficient — needed for management, legal or medical roles) typically requires a further 200–400 hours. Consistent practice outside the classroom significantly accelerates progress.
For most UK visa categories, the Home Office accepts IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration), LanguageCert International ESOL SELT, and a small number of other Secure English Language Tests (SELTs). The specific test accepted and the minimum score required varies by visa type and application route — always check the GOV.UK guidance for your specific visa before booking a test. IELTS for UKVI must be taken at an approved test centre, which is a separate category from the standard IELTS Academic test.
Yes — there is no restriction on studying English at a language school if you are in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa. You do not need a separate Student visa to attend an English language course, as long as studying is not your primary reason for being in the UK. Many language schools accommodate working professionals with evening, weekend or early morning sessions, and some offer one-to-one tuition that can be scheduled flexibly around full-time employment.
IELTS Academic is required for university entry, for most professional registration bodies (such as the NMC for nurses and the GMC for doctors), and for many visa applications requiring an academic qualification. IELTS General Training is accepted for some visa routes and for work-based applications but is not sufficient for university entry or professional registration. If in doubt, always check the specific requirement of the institution, employer or visa route you are applying to before booking your test.
