EU Settlement Scheme family permit to join family in the UK guide for EU expats and their families moving to the UK

EU Settlement Scheme Family Permit to Join Family in the UK

The purpose of the EUSS Family Permit is to ensure the holder can travel to the UK, gain entry once they arrive, and join their family members.

If you are a family member of someone from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, you may be able to obtain an EU Settlement Scheme family permit in order to come to the UK. If you are a member of an eligible person's family from Northern Ireland, you can also be entitled to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme.

Some British nationals' familie members are also eligible to apply for permits.

You must be outside the UK to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme family permit.

With the support of the EUSS family permit program, eligible family members can visit loved ones in the UK for up to 6 months.

Prior to its closure on March 29, 2022, the Surinder Singh route allowed non-EU nationals living with a British citizen in an EU nation, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein to travel back to the UK.
